The Register Forum is excited to welcome two new advisors, Mr. Erik Scott and Ms. Sarah Walker, both of whom are English teachers and bring experience and enthusiasm to the role. They are eager to support the club’s mission of fostering independent, thoughtful journalism while providing guidance that will help students develop real-world skills.
Ms. Walker, described by students as approachable and caring, is passionate about topics that prompt discussion. She enjoys running, hiking, reading, and traveling. She also serves as an advisor for CRLS’s Cultural Awareness Club, and advised the poetry club and creative writing club at her previous school. Her experience in these roles has given her a great understanding of what is expected of her; she plans to fulfill these expectations to the best of her ability.
When asked why she took on the advisor position, Ms. Walker explained to the Register Forum that she wants to help students recognize that the Register Forum can teach skills applicable to many real-world situations. She remarked, “It’s a great club and a great opportunity, [and] I’m so impressed by the students and the thorough process they follow.”
Similarly, Mr. Scott brings a unique perspective of his own, as both an educator and a “student.” He is a man with democratic ideals, described as a passionate and empathetic teacher. Outside of school, he spends his time listening to music, playing board games, and collecting vinyl records.
Like Ms. Walker, Mr. Scott has extensive involvement in advising, having spent eight years as the CRLS Speech and Debate club advisor. Mr. Scott also has a deep personal connection to journalism—he was the managing editor of his high school’s newspaper and values the independence it gives students.
Mr. Scott believes that student understanding of freedom of speech and freedom of the press is essential. He emphasized that his role is to advise the newspaper, rather than manage it, telling the Register Forum, “I act as a guide and shield for the students so that they can write with freedom and confidence.”
Together, Ms. Walker and Mr. Scott bring new energy and guidance to the Register Forum. Their combined experience, dedication, and enthusiasm signal a great year ahead for the newspaper.
