Tired of going to the same old food places in Harvard Square? Want something other than Felipe’s or Shake Shack? Then head to Oggi Gourmet! Located behind the Smith Center on 30 Dunster Street, Oggi is known for its pizza and sandwiches. Whether you’re in the mood for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this restaurant has something for you!
Oggi was first launched in 2003 by Chef Steve Welch as a small kitchen in Jamaica Plain, however, now it is located in Harvard Square. Oggi now comes with an outdoor patio and romantic decor—great for a first date.
Their handmade pies come out of the oven hot, glistening, and with an aroma that knocks one off their feet. The first bite is magical, with a plethora of savory and aromatic flavors and the cornicione exploding into your mouth. As your taste buds yearn for more, the second bite puts the first to shame; the robust tomato sauce blends with a hard dough and stretchy cheese gives any customer an amazing experience. The rest of the pie disappears into your stomach and leaves you wanting more, but don’t stop at just pizza. Oggi’s sandwiches bring the flavor to the next level.
The Register Forum tried the jerk chicken sandwich; this masterpiece left our minds discombobulated and mouths open for more. The flavor was unique, with a bit of spice, yet the chicken itself was not overpowered. Somehow, this dish sandwiched miles of flavor between the confines of two slices of bread. Oggi’s seemingly endless goodness continues with their wings, which pair perfectly with a side of crispy fries—you’ll be licking your fingers when you’re done. Oggi also knows you can never forget the bev, their custom sodas are perfect for any occasion.
Throughout the years, Harvard Square has begun to lose its sense of originality. More small businesses are beginning to close down, with larger corporations replacing them—the most notable example being Starbucks replacing the Curious George store. This however, has not been the case for Oggi. Being a Black-owned small business, Oggi has been able to thrive within the community as a staple for college students. Part of why this restaurant is so popular is due to the welcoming space Chef Welch has been able to create. When the RF first arrived at Oggi, we were blown away by how personable and friendly the chef was. Chef Welch even offered us a deal: if we rolled a six on a dice, he would pay for our pizza. Although we came short-handed, that interaction alone created an everlasting memory, one that has left us coming back for more.
At the heart of Harvard Square, Oggi Gourmet is the best restaurant around. Visit once and they’ll have you coming back again and again!
