Recently, in the vast and colorful hallways of CRLS, a dubious odor has wafted into the nostrils of many young and also stinky teenagers. Could it be the warm weather and winter clothing activating our sweat glands? Or is it the school itself? The Register Forum figured it out for you, so fear not (but don’t put away your deodorant, we could all benefit from the absence of BO).
In the words of Helena Demissie ’27, this odor is akin to “a cleat after a sweaty cotton sock was in it for two hours.” In agreement, Maya Israelsson ’25 told the Register Forum, “It smells absolutely horrifying.” Dani Montorzi ’25 concurred, “It makes me sad inside.”
Ava Keating ’26 says, “The stench is unmatched! My theory is that Mr. Smith is playing a spiteful prank on us” (This is a joke—we all love Mr. Smith).
To add on to the descriptions of this odor, which is near impossible with mere words, imagine a wet suitcase full of hard boiled eggs that have been unrefrigerated for 36 hours in combination with a salty and metallic scent. These students seem to think that the smell is the worst on the first through third floors of the main building. The arts building sits atop its hill, blissfully unaware of a stench so powerfully rancid, students avoided eating indoors for a week.
Upon interviewing the head of maintenance and our beloved principal (Allan Gately-Gehant), we do have a source for the stink. Mr. Gehant told the Register Forum, “My understanding at this point is that the smell’s origin was traced to a blockage in the plumbing in one of the science labs. Ongoing efforts are being made to clear the lines. Once flow is properly restored the smell should go away.”
Though Mr. Gehant’s answer is sufficient, it can be supplemented with some helpful advice. Firstly, deodorant and antiperspirant are two separate things and should be used together. Secondly, if you can smell yourself, other people can likely smell you too. Finally, wash your backpacks! Backpacks absorb stink like sponges. If you smell, your backpack probably does, too. It is also important to note that our building is old. Old buildings often have plumbing issues, and we need to take better care of our bathrooms! It may be time for CRLS students to start helping out our beloved maintenance staff. The case of this stinky mystery is closed.
