Despite the 2024/25 Premier League season being just 15 weeks old, there has been loads of exciting action to unpack. Whether it be the rise of Nottingham Forest, the fall of Manchester City, or the rapid success of Arne Slot at Liverpool, the most unpredictable league on the planet continues to deliver surprises every week. Here are just a few of the most remarkable moments from the 2024/25 season so far.
Nottingham Forest’s Meteoric Rise
One of this season’s biggest surprises has to have been Nottingham Forest. After finishing last season with just 32 points in 17th place, the lowest points total of any team who stayed up in the history of the league. Today, Forest find themselves in fourth place, already just four points away from matching their points total from last season and currently in position for the final Champions League spot. After years of transfer activity and change, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo may have finally built the team that owner Evangelos Marinakis sees as able to compete at the highest level in the Premier League.
Sacked in the Morning!
After winning their fourth title in a row, Manchester City kicked off the 24/25 season with several routine wins over Chelsea, West Ham, and Brentford. However, in their fifth match of the season, Ballon d’Or winner Rodri suffered a season-ending ACL injury in a collision with Thomas Partey. In his absence, the Cityzens have taken just 14 points in ten matches without him, compared to 13 points in five matches with Rodri. Since throwing away a 3-0 lead against Fyernoord in the UEFA Champions League, Manchester City’s involvement in English and European football is unlikely to convert any titles.
Newcastle Forms Formidable Pair
Two of the standout players from this season are Newcastle United’s strike partnership of Alexander Isak of Sweden and Anthony Gordon of England. Together, they have combined for nine goals and four assists for the Toon Army this season, a return that has accounted for almost two-thirds of the goals that their side have scored all season. Their partnership has been a rare bright spot for Newcastle, who have failed to replicate their success over the last few years, falling from Champions League football just two years ago to a middling 11th place standing close to the halfway point of the season.
This season’s Premier League has continued to provide twists and turns every gameweek; whether it be the collapse of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who find themselves in deep relegation trouble, or Manchester United firing Erik ten Hag after languishing in the lower midtable, the surprises this season are endless. Now for our craziest predictions for this crazy season: Ronan: Everton go on a 24-match unbeaten run after winning the Merseyside Derby, finishing in a Champions League position (it’s either that or relegation for the Toffees). Calvin: I believe that Ipswich Town will win their final five matches in a row to survive the season.
