The 2024 MLB World Series was a classic matchup that featured the league’s two marquee teams: the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both teams sported the best record in their respective leagues, with LA’s Shohei Ohtani and New York’s Aaron Judge each celebrating historic seasons as MVP. The World Series champion was decided in a best-of-seven game series alternating between LA and New York with the Dodgers ultimately claiming their 8th Fall Classic title in an exhilarating series.
Game 1: At Dodger Stadium, the home team took an early lead in Game 1. After scoring the series-opening run at the bottom of the fifth, the game stayed close, going into extra innings all tied up 2-2. The Yankees hit one back, leaving the Dodgers down 3-2 with the bases loaded and two outs. A hobbled Freddie Freeman stepped up to the plate, and on the first pitch of the at-bat, the all-star first baseman sent the ball yards, giving LA the win. This was highly reminiscent of a certain Kirk Gibson home run 36 years prior, a moment that every young baseball player has dreamt of.
Game 2: Game two was full of home runs, with both teams trading home runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. But the Dodgers, after a late comeback attempt in the 9th inning by the Yankees, took this one as well. Their pitching held together as starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed only one run in 6 innings, and star closer Blake Treinen pulled it together after their near disaster in the 9th.
Game 3: Heading into New York, Yankee Stadium was full of energy as the Yankees looked to rally a win down 2-0. Down 4-0 in the 9th, the Yankees started to build something up. An Alex Verdugo home run put the Yankees within two, but the Dodgers’ star pitching shut them down before they could mount a full-on comeback, making the win to go up 3-0.
Game 4: Looking to take it home for good, the Dodgers came out swinging, scoring two in the top of the 1st inning. However, this lead didn’t last and the Yankees rallied successfully. Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam in the 3rd inning and the Yankees sealed it off in the 8th inning with 5 runs, putting them up 11-4 on the Dodgers for the night.
Game 5: Game 5 was electric, with the Yankees looking to pull one back and the Dodgers wanting to close it out. The Yankees were looking strong going into the 5th inning with a five-run lead thanks to back-to-back home runs from Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisolm Jr. However, the Yankees made multiple errors miscommunicating and forgetting to cover the base, leaving the Dodgers with a five-run inning of their own. With all of the momentum going into the final innings of the game, the Yankees did strike back in the 6th inning, but the Dodgers closed it out in New York with two runs in the top of the 8th inning, bringing home the Commissioner’s Trophy for the second time in five years.
