Before fall foliage reveals itself, Harvard students move in, and Starbucks and Dunkin’ release their fall-themed drinks, Autumn emerges in Cambridge when CRLS student-athletes begin to appear at Danehy Park. To these athletes, the start of pre-season means more than just tryouts and shin splints; it is a return to a space that feels like home. Whether they are new to the sport or seasoned veterans, Cambridge athletes start the year off by forming a community that is both a family and a formal team. Mahelet Asnake, ‘25, a varsity soccer player, felt like her team had definitely become a tight-knit group. When asked by the Register Forum, “How has your team changed your school experience?”, Asnake responded, “These teams encourage us to form connections with others that ultimately lead us to have a bond that’s ‘family.’”
Across all sports, athletes highly recommended joining the athletics program as a way to build genuine connections. Paul Colombo, ‘24, was enthusiastic about his commitment to the cross-country team. Colombo explained, “Joining the track and cross country team was one of 1the best decisions I’ve made. It gave me a space to challenge myself, taught me about discipline, and gave me a group of friends I consider family.” Although CRLS sports provide an opportunity for competition and athletic excellence, they cultivate trust and loyalty among student-athletes. Jeremy Friedman-Wellisch, ‘25, spoke highly of his experience with the boys’ soccer program. He stated, “I really care about the success of our soccer program, because being competitive is fun and important, but I know that no matter the results of each game my team will support one another.” Dosia Fennell, ‘25, elaborated on the opportunities that CRLS athletics can provide for students. As a member of the girls’ crew team, Fennell commented, “It takes a lot of strength and commitment… but I think anyone who wants to do it well can do it well.” Whether students are looking for new friends, athletic achievement, or simply to try a new activity, CRLS athletes believe joining a sports team is the way to go.
With the fall sports season underway, Falcon athletes are prepared to compete to the best of their abilities and grow as individuals. Salendjy Dascelin, ‘24, has played football and runs track for CRLS. When interviewed by the Register Forum, Dascelin shared his words of advice for freshmen. He counseled, “Whether you’re doing a sport for fun, because you love it, to help get you into college, or a mix of those, do it to the best of your ability. You will see those efforts prosper in different aspects of your lives. Invest in yourself and don’t be afraid to ask questions.” As Dascelin alluded to, Falcon athletes gain friendships, life skills, and passion, not to mention athleticism, from their fall sports. While championship teams may come and go, the families formed along the way will last a lifetime.
