The Falcons Come Home

Throughout the week leading up to the CRLS boys varsity football homecoming game, the buzz about the game and the events around it were heard in the CRLS hallways. “Who’s gonna win?” “What’s the word tonight?” “Who do you think is gonna win Homecoming Queen?”
Up until the homecoming game, the football team had only won one game. This was a crucial game for the team in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. However, their opponent, Westford Academy, was in a similar position. They had only won two games up until the game, and they were looking for a third. The homecoming game was shaping up to be a good one.
Despite all the hype leading up to the game, the stands were a bit empty when the first quarter started. Initially, there were worries that, for the first time in a long time, nobody would show up to the homecoming game. Finally, towards the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter, groups of 4-5 Rindge students dressed in all black began to file in.
About halfway through the second quarter, the stands were filled with Cambridge’s finest, ready to cheer their team on. Despite the enthusiasm from the crowd, the football team had a rough first half. Westford Academy scored early and was able to hold a sizable lead by the end of the first half.
Cambridge’s offense did not seem to be clicking and was not able to score in the first half. Regardless, the CRLS cheerleading squad, led by senior captains Patrina Eugene, Tamia Lawrence, Betty Derege, and Destiny Baker, were enthusiastic and energetic throughout the night. The squad kept the crowd in the game.
They were there to see a show, and a show is what they got.
When the first half ended, the CRLS student body was surprised with a special appearance from our very own Freddie the Falcon. Afterward, the candidates for Homecoming Royalty ran onto the field, anticipating their big moment.
Junior Liz Roman was crowned Homecoming Princess. Senior Destiny Pina took home the title of Homecoming Queen. Finally, senior running back Andre Colas was crowned Homecoming King. After being voted Homecoming King, Colas celebrated with Tariq Lacona ’19.
It was also King Colas who scored Cambridge’s only touchdown of the night, a dazzling 60-yard run to the end zone. Westford Academy held on to their lead and ended up winning the game 34-6.
To be quite frank, the fans didn’t really care; they were there to see a show, and a show is what they got. Hopefully, the football team can turn things around before the season is over. GO FALCONS!
